A 23-year-old suspect has been arrested for allegedly aiding and abetting the murder of notorious criminal figure and drug trafficker Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne, also known as “Ganemulla Sanjeewa.” The suspect, identified as Julian Madawan, a resident of Helamuthu Sevana, Colombo 15, was apprehended yesterday (21) by officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) in the Madampitiya Police Division, said police. According to police, he was arrested on charges of aiding and abetting the murder by providing information regarding the locations of courtrooms within the court complex. Accordingly, a total of 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with this crime so far. The CCD continues its investigation into the fatal shooting of Ganemulla Sanjeewa, which took place at the Aluthkade No. 05 Magistrate’s Court on February 19, 2025.

Passenger arrested over attempt to sexually abuse two flight attendants

A passenger who attempted to sexually abuse two female flight attendants on a flight from Singapore to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake has been arrested by the Airport Police. The arrested individual is a 38-year-old resident of the Athurugiriya area. The suspect had arrived at BIA onboard a SriLankan Airlines flight from Singapore at 10.00 p.m. last night (15). The suspect, who was heavily intoxicated, had attempted to sexually abuse two female flight attendants on duty. After the flight attendants reported the incident to the pilot, steps had been taken to inform the BIA Control Room. Accordingly, upon landing at BIA, the suspect was arrested by SriLankan Airlines security officers and taken to the Katunayake Police. Statements have been recorded from the two flight attendants regarding the incident. Furthermore, after being presented to the Negombo Judicial Medical Officer, it was confirmed that the passenger in question was heavily intoxicated. Since the incident occurred within Sri Lankan airspace, the suspect is scheduled to be presented before the Colombo No. 01 Magistrate’s Court today (16).

Police informed the court that investigations are underway to determine whether the crime was committed due to the Jailor’s dereliction of duty. Police also pointed out to the court that investigations have revealed that the suspected prison officer had not taken any steps to arrest the individual who shot at “Ganemulla Sanjeewa” within the court premises and fled. During the trial, police also requested permission to obtain a record of the suspect’s mobile phone calls for further investigations. The court granted permission for the requests and ordered the suspect to be remanded until March 21.

�Ganemulla Sanjeewa� murder: Evidence uncovered against arrested cops, all suspects further remanded

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered ten suspects arrested in connection with the shooting and killing of the notorious criminal figure and drug trafficker Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne alias “Ganemulla Sanjeewa” to be remanded further until April 04. The suspects were virtually produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali via ‘Skype’ technology today (21). Presenting facts before the court during the trial, the officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) said that information have been uncovered that the police constable attached to Negombo Police Station, who has been named as the third suspect of the case, had connections with the fugitive accomplice of the case, Ishara Sewwandi. The CCD officers stated that Sewwandi had sent pictures of two firearms to the constable from her mobile phone and that the suspect had later deleted them from his phone. However, the pictures have been recovered during the investigation, according to the CCD. Meanwhile, the police informed the court that one of the firearms in question was the revolver used in Ganemulla Sanjeewa’s murder and that further investigations are underway regarding the remaining firearm. Furthermore, the police informed the court that statements have been recorded from around 55 individuals in relation to the incident and that around 25 more evidence have been gathered from public institutions in this regard. The court was also told that direct evidence have been uncovered against the officer attached to Athurugiriya Police Station who was arrested in connection with the crime. Accordingly, the police requested the court to remand the suspects further as investigations into the incident continue. After considering the facts presented, the Chief Magistrate ordered the suspects to be remanded further until April 04.

Woman arrested at BIA in connection with murder of Buddhist monk

Colombo, March 13 (Daily Mirror) - A 24-year-old woman arriving from Dubai was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in connection with the murder of a Buddhist monk at a temple in Wettewa in 2022. Police said that Seeduwa Police launched an investigation after a Buddhist monk was found strangled to death, with property theft also reported on September 14, 2022. Wele Suda�s brother arrested for attacking policeman

Police have arrested suspected drug trafficker Sunimal Kumara, alias "Thaju", for allegedly assaulting a police constable with a sharp weapon during a drug raid. The suspect was apprehended in Rajagiriya today (17), the police said. According to police, Sunimal Kumara is the brother of notorious drug kingpin Samantha Kumara, alias "Wele Suda," who is currently imprisoned for drug trafficking. The arrest follows a special drug raid conducted last afternoon (16) in the Badowita Phase 3 area by officers from the Badowita Police Post, attached to Mount Lavinia Police. During the raid, police officers received a tip-off regarding an individual who is engaged in a drug racket in the area. Acting on this information, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and a constable proceeded to arrest the suspect, according to police. Upon inspecting the suspect, who was found standing on the roadside, police have discovered drugs in his possession. When the officers attempted to arrest him, the suspect resisted and grappled with the officers. During the altercation, he had attacked the constable with a sharp weapon, injuring him, before managing to flee the scene, the police said. The injured constable sustained stab wounds to his shoulder and abdomen and is currently receiving treatment at Colombo - South Teaching Hospital.

Prison Jailer remanded till March 21 for aiding and abetting in Ganemulla Sanjeewa murder

By Bhagya Silva A prison jailer, who was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division over allegations of aiding and abetting the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa, was remanded till March 21 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela today. The Magistrate also ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to submit a summary of evidence against the suspect at the next hearing. The suspect, Manoj Udaya Santha, is a jailer attached to the Boossa Prison. The CID told court that at the time of the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa the jailer was present near the door. They further stated that although gunfire had been discharged, the suspect had sufficient time to apprehend the assailant but failed to do so, leading to his arrest on charges of aiding and abetting the crime. Representing the suspect, his counsel argued that he has served in the department for over 27 years without any prior allegations against him and urged the court to consider the nature of the accusations carefully.
