By Dayaratne Embogama Colombo, March 14 (Daily Mirror) - A live hand grenade of a foreign make has been recovered from the house of the suspect in custody in connection with the rape of a lady doctor in the Anuradhapura Hospital. Police said during interrogation of the suspect under a 48-hour detention order, he revealed that he had in his possesion a hand grenade. The hand grenade had been hidden in a bag with an onamental fan “Watapatha” and a bowl used by Buddhist monks in a deserted house at Elapara in Galnewa.

The suspect arrested in connection with the Anuradhapura hospital sexual assault case has been ordered to be remanded further until March 24, 2025. This order was issued after he was produced before Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court today (17). Meanwhile, although the suspect was scheduled to be presented for an identification parade today, the procedure has been cancelled as the victimized doctor did not participate for the identification parade. Additionally, the main suspect’s sister and another individual who were arrested over the charges of aiding the suspect to hide after the crime have been released on two surety bails of Rs. 200,000 each. The accused, a former army soldier named Nilantha Manduranga Ratnayake, who is a resident of Galnewa New Town, was arrested in a joint operation conducted by the police and the Special Task Force (STF) in the Nidikumbhayaya area of Galnewa.

Colombo, March 17 (Daily Mirror) - The suspect arrested over the sexual assault and rape of a female doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital has been further remanded till March 24 after being produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court today. The accused, Nilantha Manduranga Ratnayake, a former army soldier and resident of Galnewa New Town, was arrested in the Nidikumbhayaya area of Galnewa last week. He was initially remanded until today and further remanded after being produced before court.

Colombo, March 13 (Daily Mirror) - The suspect apprehended in connection with the sexual assault of a female doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital has been ordered to be detained for 48 hours for further questioning. The decision was made after the suspect was presented before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court. In addition, the suspect’s sister and another individual, who were arrested for allegedly aiding and abetting the suspect, have been remanded until March 17. The orders were issued by Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa Jayasuriya.
